When Bollywood comedy Dum Laga Ke Haisha, released in late 2015, became the highest grossing Indian film of all time, it was clear that Indians are desperate for an alternative to their overly sentimental, often misogynistic Bollywood romances. On the surface Dum Laga Ke Haisha is a simple variation on the standard love story: an irresistible, beautiful woman marries a poor man with no skills and little ambition. But this film actually has more depth to offer than its predecessor films did. The trio of characters are sidelined by scenes exploring traditional Indian society’s values around marriage and divorce. The film examines the modern-day challenges that Indians face in terms of financial stability, entrepreneurship, sexual liberation and gender equality. The focus is on relationships between men and women, rather than on romance. This is not quite the Indian film Durga Puja (2015) or Katti Batti (2015) or even Omkara (2014), which are all about romance. But it does continue to give Bollywood films a run for their money as one of India’s few major exports. By Valentine's Day, Manvendra has given up his job as a sales clerk at a supermarket to become an entrepreneur after hearing that his sister Anandi set up her own kite-making business with funds from her family inheritance. Anandi and her husband, Mahesh, work hard to buy a small kite-making business and move it above the local temple. On the night before the annual Kite Festival, and at a time when Anandi and Mahesh are facing financial difficulties (there is no money for their children’s dowry), Anandi receives a e-mail from her cousin asking for help. They then learn that their mother has died. It turns out that Manvendra works as an actor in Bollywood movies as part of his job as a sales clerk at the supermarket. His character is named Manoj Kumar. He plays a young man who is in love with the young woman who is about to marry another man. Manoj’s character and his love interest meet and run off together to start a new life without the approval of their parents and families. The movie within the movie is called Dum Lagake Haisha , which means, “Take it easy.” This signifies that it is fine to take risks as long as you take things slowly and not go overboard. The film begins with Manvendra, his sister Anandi and their father returning from the funeral of their mother, Veena Mahashabde (also played by Bhumi Pednekar). Veena had died of a heart attack after an unsuccessful (and risky) surgical procedure. Veena was the second oldest of five daughters in a wealthy family; she was born into a family that did not name any girls. All of her siblings were named for flowers: Vibha, Bindu, Margo and Lola (who all had successful careers). Veena and her sisters did not share what they considered to be the traditional fate of only three daughters: marriage. At the funeral, Anandi receives a telephone call from Manvendra who plays his character in Vice Versa . He tells her that his sister is planning to run away with him on their wedding day. cfa1e77820
